Broken Things by Matthew West
When I first heard this song, it truly helped me. I was believing an awful lie and it helped break that lie in half, so it did not have power over me anymore. I was living in shame and strong condemnation. I believed I had done too many wrongs and made too many mistakes, that God did not want to hear from me anymore. This song spoke truth into me and reminded me who Jesus really is.
If you have ever felt unworthy of His love or asked God how could He use you, with all the mistakes you’ve made, then this song I believe, will bring great comfort, hope, and you will hear the truth through this song. It is incredibly uplifting and gives us sinners hope, that God still has a plan for us and we are very much a part of His loving kingdom.
Hope you give this song a listen and enjoy this Music Monday breakdown!
Intro:
If grace was a kingdom
I’d stopped at the gate
Thinkin’ I don’t deserve to pass through
After all of the mistakes that I’ve made
Oh but I heard a whisper
As heaven bent down
Said child, don’t you know that the first will be last
And the last get a crown
I have definitely had those thoughts that I had made too many mistakes to be invited into God’s kingdom. I think a lot of believers have had those moments of feeling knee deep in their shame and mistakes. I can relate so much to these lyrics because I felt the opposite from God, from how I was feeling about my own mistakes. His arms were still open wide telling me to come home to Him. I also love the mention of the verse from the book of Matthew here. God’s kingdom operates differently than here on earth. Many that are “first” in worldly views, may be last in the kingdom of heaven. That verse is so intriguing to me.
Chorus:
Now I’m just a beggar in the presence of a King
I wish I could bring so much more
But if it’s true
You use broken things
Then here I am Lord, I am all Yours
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Jesus is king of the world. He is perfect and we are not. But, I feel that is the way it is supposed to be. Jesus does not look down on us the way many people think. He wants to be our greatest friend and have a relationship with us. And I also believe that if we were all made perfect, like Him, He couldn’t use us in extraordinary ways to show His glory and bring more people to Him.
Next Lyrics:
The pages of history
They tell me it’s true
That it’s never the perfect
It’s always the ones with the scars that You use
It’s the rebels and the prodigals
It’s the humble and the weak
All the misfit heroes You chose
Tell me there’s hope for sinners like me
These lyrics are probably my favorite in the whole song. All throughout the bible, we read stories of people that have a unique story and face challenges. And they are not random. They were hand picked from God to shine His glory and light to the world.
God does not look for the perfect people to shine His light. He uses all kinds of people with different stories.
I know that gives me so much hope in my own story. While I made many mistakes, Jesus does not write us off for that sin. He hates the sin, but never hates us. And I am so thankful for who Jesus is.
Chorus Repeats
Last Lyrics:
Grace is a kingdom
With gates open wide
There’s seat at the table just waiting for you
So, come on inside
God’s grace is something to be treasured. And it is available to every human that walks this life out. And it is not something we have to qualify for. God’s grace is a free gift and it is grace that by which we were saved through Jesus.
If there is one message I want to make clear through this song and one I experienced is this:
No sin, mistake, or shame you have felt, is too much for God to handle. You are not too far gone to repent and turn from a life of sin and run home to Jesus. The one who created you and loves you more than you know. He has your seat, with your name on it at His table.
Whatever lies you have believed about yourself or even about Jesus, they are not true.
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. He came to give you abundance and joy and peace. Better than the world can ever give you. I have experienced it for myself in so many beautiful ways. He is real and He can give you a new beautiful start in life, and does not hold your past against you.
So stop waiting, run to Him. He will open His arms and wow you with the love He gives you and blessings He has for you.
Verses Incorporated in Song:
“ And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother, or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.” –Matthew 19:29-30 (NIV)
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God – not by works, so that no one can boast.” –Ephesians 2:8-9 (NIV)
“ But go and learn what this means: I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” –Matthew 9:13 (NIV)
I hope and pray that this song and my thoughts on it has brought encouragement to anyone who needs it.
Hope you all have a blessed week!
