Music Monday

By: Chris Tomlin Ft. Raelynn

I very recently heard this song for the first time and it could not have felt more timely for me to hear it. It is so relatable and I can definitely say these lyrics line up with how I’ve been feeling.

I feel everyone will be able to relate to this song and probably have felt these lyrics multiple times in their life. It represents real thoughts that are met with God’s real, true love and grace for us. This song took my heart the first moment I heard it and I hope it does the same for you and encourages your heart that you are not alone in your sin. Jesus always meets us there and loves even the parts we have a hard time loving ourselves.

Hope you enjoy this music Monday breakdown!

Opening:

Why do I do things I hate?

Why do I say things that I shouldn’t say?

When I know better, yeah

I could love better

Some days I take it too far

Sometimes the world gets the best of my heart

I know who I am (I know who I am)

‘Til I forget just who I am

When I first heard these opening lyrics, it couldn’t of hit home more. I feel like I have had all these thoughts lately. We all say things we shouldn’t and don’t always do the right thing. I love the last few lines of the lyrics:

Sometimes the world can get the best of our hearts. The negativity, the cruelty, and the critics that surround us can feel all like too much. It can start to creep in where it shouldn’t. It can make you feel not yourself and you need that reminder of who and whose you are.

When I find myself again

Standing knee-deep in my sin

Chorus:

You chase me down

When I don’t deserve it

You show me love, You don’t make me earn it

I make a mess, and I just start running

Hoping that You won’t know

Oh, when I’m lost

And I’m low in a place that I think You won’t go

You chase me down

You chase me down

We humans, are sinful by our flesh and we will always be that way. We may find ourselves in our sin knee deep, like this song says. We may be sinful and make mistakes and that is all we of ourselves.

But our God does not. He is made perfect, so that means when we are in a relationship with Him, His perfect love chases us down.

Even when we feel we don’t deserve His love or even His attention, God does not feel this way.

I know I feel this way and every time you do I want you to remember that God loves you just as much at your worst as He does at your best.

Jesus meets us right where we are. He does not expect us to have it “all together” before we can come to Him. He wants us to come to Him in our sin and with our mistakes and hear us. He still loves us.

We never have to earn His love because He already paid that ultimate price on the cross. Even when we mess up and feel shame, God looks at us and still calls us His beloved. That is such a beautiful truth we can stand on in those low moments.

There is NOTHING that can separate us from God’s immense, deep love for us.

His love will always chase you down and He will show you that love to you because He loves you so dearly. He wants you to know that, that in your sin,  in your shame, and in your low moments, He is not going anywhere.

Let Jesus chase you down and show you exactly what His love can do in your heart and life. His love has no end for you.

Next Section:

Sometimes I can’t believe

You stay when You don’t have to ’cause You won’t leave

Whatever that looks like, yeah

That’s what love looks like

I love these lyrics because it truly explains who Jesus is and how radically He loves us.

We are all unloveable at times and we truly do not deserve the grace and beautiful love of Jesus, but that is what is amazing and so powerfully emotional about Jesus is how He loves.

Jesus is known because of how He loves others and I love that.

Chorus repeats

Final Lyrics:

You chase, You chase, You chase

You chase, You chase, You chase

I know this must be grace (I know this must be grace)

‘Cause You chase, You chase, You chase

Ends with Chorus

Jesus is constantly after our hearts. Even when we mess up, sin, or do not even seek Him first. Because that is who He is.

He chases us and will always show His love to us. He was made to show that love to us whether we deserve it or not. This is what grace is all about. That is why when we mess up, we do not need to keep feeling shameful and hiding from God. Because He gives us grace.

Nothing that you do will ever change His love for YOU. I feel that that powerful truth  can break a lot of chains in people’s lives.

Verses Related to the Song:

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  Romans 8:38-39 (NIV)

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive  mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions- it is by grace you have been saved.” -Ephesians 2:4-5 (NIV)

I hope you find encouragement within the lyrics of this song and remember to give yourself grace when you make mistakes, because Jesus does. You are a work in progress and being molded and made new by your God.

He is always chasing after you heart and wants to show His radical love to you.

All for Jesus,

Steph
